GETTING STUCK IN: Student Volunteer Army members (from left) Albert Nisbet, Veronica Mitchell, Stanley O’Toole, Patrick Nicholls, Laura Irwin and Joel Wallan were among more than 200 students who cleaned up the Heathcote River last weekend. As well as cleaning up the river the students weeded overgrown vegetation and scrubbed graffiti off walls in Woolston. The clean-up was part of the City Care Connect the Community event presented by the Student Volunteer Army. Other community volunteers contributed to the day. After the clean-up a community barbecue was held at Bamford School. The students also did tree planting at Southshore.
Search for mega facility site widens GEORGIA O’CONNOR-HARDING
Warren Park is the latest venue being investigated for a mega facility in Hornby. The Oakley Cres site has been mentioned in a city council report as a possible replacement for sports clubs that currently use Denton Park. The new Hornby Library and South West Recreation and Sports Centre will service suburbs in the

south-west of the city. However, the city council dodged questions from Western News about Warren Park. Head of recreation and sports John Filsell said the city council is investigating a range of options for locating the Hornby facility. He said no site has been confirmed yet and there are no current proposals to relocate the sports clubs from Denton Park. Earlier this year Western News
revealed that Denton Park was likely to be the venue for a major community facility which would primarily cater for sports clubs – and possibly other community groups. Another potential site is Kyle Park. Earlier this year, the city council conducted geotechnical investigations at Kyle Park as part of its planning for the Hornby facility. For this, the city council did a
scoping study to see if the sports clubs could be relocated to Kyle Park. Mr Filsell said further capacity at the park is being investigated. Hornby Rugby Football Club president John Catchpole said Denton Park, where they are based, was the club’s preferred site. Their preferred site was Denton Park. However, if that changed, he would prefer Warren Park over Kyle Park. Hornby Cricket Club president
Kevin Hornbrook, which is also based at Denton Park, said Warren Park would be ideal for a bigger facility. “It would be a great idea. You have got Halswell not far away, the new Aidanfield, you have got Wigram ‌ its not far from Hornby,â€? he said. Fire destroys Riccarton sheds
TRAIN TUNNELS APPROVED Canterbury Society of Model and Experimental Engineers has been granted a variation to their leases on Halswell Domain so they can build two tunnels over their train tracks. Each tunnel will be 10 sq m in size and will have gates on either end. The gates will enable the tunnel to be locked when the trains are not running.
Site for people allegedly sleeping rough ANDREW KING
A fire ripped through a set of sheds on a Housing New Zealand property where people are known to sleep rough in Riccarton. It is unsure at this stage if the fire has been deliberately lit or was an accident caused by somebody using the sheds as accommodation. A charred mattress lay in front of the sheds after the fire was extinguished. Acting Detective Sergeant Wayne Boyd is investigating the fire on Riccarton Rd and said it looked like someone had been sleeping in the shed. “We have had a resident say people sleep rough in there from time to time,” he said. He said the sheds will be have to be demolished as they are badly damaged. A few residents lost property they had stored in the sheds. “The stuff in there was easily ignitable, paper and other items,” Acting Detective Sergeant Boyd said. Fire crews from Addington and Sockburn fought the blaze for nearly two hours. It is not the first time the property has been in the police spotlight. In 2006 Sydney George Boyd died after allegedly being pushed down a flight of stairs and through a reinforced window. No-one has been charged in connection with the death. In 2008 Cats Protection League worker Kerry Downey was murdered by Ashley Peach SHEDS DESTROYED: A fire in storage sheds in Riccarton could have been started by in a flat just metres from where Boyd’s body someone sleeping rough. Sarah MacDonald
Tribute to World War 2 soldier After winning a writing competition on the topic of heroes back in high school, Sarah MacDonald, 19, was asked to speak at several war commemorations including the Halswell Anzac service last month. She spoke to Georgia O’Connor-Harding about travelling to France and what she hopes to achieve when she finishes university studies
POWER OF SPEECH: Sarah MacDonald speaking at a French war commemoration in Yevres, France.
Tell me about the speech you did at the Halswell Anzac Service not too long ago? I related my speech for Anzac Day to one I wrote on heroes back when I was in high school. But I changed it slightly because Anzac Day is quite different. My original speech which I wrote for a commemoration in Yevres, France was dedicated to one man. For the Halswell Anzac service I wanted to relate it to all men who fought in the war. Anzac Day was a day for everyone where as the speech I originally wrote about was on one man from Christchurch who risked his life to save his crew and a small village. Tell me about the writing competition you won back in high school? In my last year at Villa Maria College I won it through the The
School for Young Writers with founding director Glyn Strange. He sent out an essay question on the topic what is a hero and asked us to relate it to Christchurch soldier Noel Stokes. My speech ended up winning and I spoke at a French war commemoration in Yevres, France. During my time in France I got to stay with a host family in a place called Chateaudun. Would you like to tell me a bit about the speech you wrote originally? Well, the whole reason a war commemoration was held in Yevres was because of a Christchurch soldier Noel Stokes who was a fighter in World War 2. Basically he was due to come home and on his last trip he was flying over the area near Yevres and they came under German fire.
Him and five others in the plane were hit badly. In the attack, rear gunner Norman Wilding was killed as well. Noel Stokes maintained the plane so his crew could escape because the plane was destined to perish. While doing that he averted it from the small village. So he essentially stayed in the plane and died but saved his crew and a small tiny village. The other part of the story is he and one of his other crew members killed were buried in secret – because it was against German orders. They risked their lives to give him a burial. Tell me about your perception on what a hero is? I thought to myself a hero it is someone who goes outside their duty. Basically I compared Noel Stokes to superman because I wanted to highlight the fact he

earns student speaking roles didn’t go outside of his duty but it was unfair to say he wasn’t a hero. Everyone who served in the war had an exceptional job. Their circumstances were unfair. I tried to relate to a young person’s perspective. I compared it to my younger brother – his biggest duty is worrying about his studies. The people of Yevres were also heroes but they were more ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. They didn’t have to bury Noel Stokes but they did. From that I wanted to say everyone who went to war were heroes. Their duty was unimaginable, they suffered. I mean together they stood but divided they fell. When I went to France to speak in at the war commemoration it was extremely scary speaking in French to the people of Yevres but it pushed me. What are some of your family’s connections to the war? My great uncle was Richard Travis and he is one of New Zealand’s most known soldiers. He had a bit of a connection to
the ward. I spoke about my grandfather Devan Palmer in my speech at Yevres as well. I remember once my grandfather spoke about the war when I was little and the pain in his eyes said it all. He doesn’t really want to talk about the war. But I wanted to show my gratitude though my speech. He went through a lot. He fought in the Pacific. He was a contributing factor of me wanting to travel to France and speak to the people of Yevres. When did you start learning French? I can’t remember when I started but it was hard to pick up. I decided I wanted to learn in my second last year of school. It took a while to write my speech in French. My French teacher helped me a lot with converting my speech because I didn’t want to be too formal – I wanted to be truthful in what I said. What did your friends and family have to say about you winning the writer’s competition? My family was proud because

of my reasonings of wanting the trip. My other grandfather loved history and was proud. My friends thought it was a good opportunity too. I wore Richard Travis’ replica of the medals at the speech. Are you hoping to travel overseas again in a few years time? Yes, I absolutely loved travelling overseas. I very much want to go back to France. I would like to study over there. At the moment at Canterbury University I am studying biology, French and psychology. I want to eventually do corresponding subjects of that in France. I definitely plan to go visit my host family I stayed with overseas too. What was your trip overseas like? I had to go to school with my host sister. They took me to neighbouring towns in the Loire Valley. There was heaps of castles – real cool. What sort of career would you like to go into?

I am not 100 per cent sure. I think I will go where my studies will take me because I know I can go into paleontology, marine biology or conservation – I like all of that. I know I want to pursue biology. My interest was sparked in my last year in high school. I like animals and paleontology – human evolution. What do you think of the state of the world at the moment? It is hard to prevent. It is always a progress to make one thing better. It’s a shame parts of the world are suffering and is not in balance. I know I am exceedingly lucky in what I have because New Zealand is so peaceful. I haven’t had to experience anything compared to less fortunate parts of the world. I am extremely grateful. What would you like to see changed – whether it is in Christchurch or internationally? It may sound airy-fairy but I think appreciation of nature. I think people underestimate what the natural environment can
have on our mental and physical health. It is such an intricate system when you change one thing it has a flow-on effect. And are you enjoying uni life? I love what I am studying. I am doing third year French and second year biology. I want to get my French out of the way because I don’t want to be at Canterbury University too long. It is a big work load but I love it. I do feel privileged. I feel sorry for people who can’t get passionate about what they are studying. The only subject I don’t enjoy as much is statistics. But it is like vegetables – it is good for you. I frequently do use it. What do you enjoy doing the most in your spare time? I am quite busy. I mostly enjoy music – playing the piano. I am artistically inclined. I like movies, reading and seeing my friends. I have a great passion for art. Another thing I like about biology is the art forms found in nature. If you look at a flower, the way the inflorescence is usually quite symmetrical.

Trialling LED warning lights Senior Sergeant Peter Stills When I started in the Christchurch west area as the police community services manager three years ago – my mandate was to lead a change to the prevention first policing model. The purpose was being able to create a safer community and a place where residents and others felt safer. At the front of the model was a people-focus particularly on victims or potential victims. There are five areas that drive the focus, families, alcohol, youth, organised crime and policing the roads. It was obvious that the greatest single policing risk in the area was vehicle crashes involving death and/or serious injury. Statistically the greatest number of serious crashes were happening at intersections. It was evident that failing to stop at intersections was a massive problem and it was apparent that motorists were failing to be aware of approaching stop controlled intersections. During my years in police probably the worst task one can
SOAP BOX be given is to have to knock on the door of a house, often in the middle of the night, and to have to tell a parent or family member of the death of a loved one. It is horrible. The local police staff got our heads together and challenged ourselves to come up with an idea that might make a difference. Something new. As a result, and following on from what was at times a frustrating and difficult process we have been trialling flashing LED light advanced warning signs at intersections. The idea of the sign is to trigger an awareness in motorists that an intersection is approaching and to make the motorist focus and to stop and be attentive at the intersection. Let’s hope it works. Time will tell. The trial will grow with further signs put up and the quality of the componentry will improve quickly.
Reader Sarah Wylie responds to stories and columns in the Western News on Halswell Skate Park: Halswell has lacked youth recreational facilities for many years, and it is exciting that the city council is committed to developing a skate park in the area. My kids are older, and have moved beyond skating now, but would have loved a local amenity like this a few years ago. It is great that other children and young people can benefit from a new skate facility serving this part of the city. I wrote the city council’s old Skateboarding, Inline Skating and Freestyle BMXing strategy in the early 2000s, and in undertaking that research I visited all the city’s skateboarding facilities at that time, and
met with a large number of skate facility users of a wide range of ages and disciplines. In undertaking the research, I was blown away by the sheer awesomeness of many of the young people I met in the skater community. Further, I never witnessed anything other than great behaviour, and wonderful examples of turn taking, peer mentoring, encouragement and praise of peers, and care for each other. The proposed location at Halswell Domain I think is the best choice. This is because it is the most central, serves a surrounding population with many children and young people. It is also in a high profile, high visibility area, and complements the existing play structures. I am aware via the Halswell Community Group Facebook
page that a very misleading flyer has been circulated, gathering opposition to a skate facility by saying that part of the existing playground will be removed and a skate facility put in its place. It also cites research in a manner which does not appear to fit with the research scope, scale or findings. I suspect it is to try and turn people against the facility. Discussions on the social media thread which resulted to a sharing of the flyer show there is widespread support for the domain location. I so hope the city council sees sense, listens to the majority and puts the well-being of children and young people first, by going with the Halswell Domain location. Occupied, active children and young people are great citizens.
War memorial repairs complete The Halswell War Memorial has been restored to its former glory with lighting added in honour of the men who died in World War 1. Repairs to the memorial, which suffered minor damage in the earthquakes, were completed last week. Unveiled in June 1924, the memorial was built to commemorate residents of the Halswell area who died in World War 1,
It was paid entirely by donations from the community. After being urged by the Halswell Residents’ Association and Templeton RSA, lighting was added to the war memorial so it could be appreciated after dark. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board funded the lighting while the residents’association and RSA GRAND: The Halswell War contributed to its installation. Memorial has been restored.

Your Traditional Local Butcher on Waimairi Road C
hris Miller of Meat @ Millers has been a butcher since first entering the industry at 16. Now with over 30 years experience, Chris works alongside a small team of equally experienced butchers at Meat @ Millers. His traditional butchery in Fendalton of 17 years is now located on the corner of Waimairi and Maidstone Road in Ilam.
With the amount of time, effort, and love that goes into preserving and preparing meats, makes for a truly tantalising adventure for your taste buds that simply can’t be replicated by conveyor belt processing used in large meat processing plants. By buying these meats you are supporting the continuation of these traditional techniques, which are most certainly worth preserving.
Proudly supporting local Canterbury suppliers, Meat @ Millers receives daily deliveries of meat, which is all processed using traditional butchery methods of boning, curing and smoking, ensuring the very best in quality and freshness. All chicken is hormone-free and barn raised, and boned on a daily basis to be made into cordon bleu, schnitzel, and tasty kebabs, using Meat @ Millers’ speciality marinades, which are all made on the premises. Gluten free options are available, with gluten free ham and dry cured bacon, which is also free range, as well as their delicious gourmet sausages, which are all handmade on site. Meat @ Millers is renowned for its speciality meats that require time-honoured traditional methods of curing and smoking, which is carried by the experienced Meat @ Millers’ butchers. Chris takes me on a fascinating tour behind the scenes where butchers, each with around 20 years experience each, are hard at work chopping, slicing, and preparing meat for curing, smoking, and making into sausages.
Priding themselves on providing excellent standards of customer service, including wonderful age-old traditions reminiscent of our childhoods, where kids are still given free cheerios, doors are opened, and expert advice is always on hand for the best methods of meat preparation and cooking of their meats. Meat @ Millers listens to their customers and provides according to demand. If there is something they don’t have, just let them know and chances are they’ll be more than happy to accommodate your needs. In addition to their wide range of speciality meats, which includes tender butterfly legs of lamb, beef fillets, and free-range turkeys for Christmas and other special events, Meat @ Millers offers fresh salmon direct from Akaroa, which is cured and house smoked on site. When the fishing season recommences in October, local fishermen can bring in their catch of salmon, where they offer a salmon processing service. Give Meat @ Millers a call today at their Waimairi branch on 03 358 7004. Fax your orders through on 03 358 7005, or pay them a visit.

Plans for cafe at bus lounge on track
BLOOMING: Riccarton West Community Garden has become a work of pride.
New life for community garden A community garden project will continue to flourish after a lease extension was granted by Housing New Zealand. The Riccarton West Community Garden started in October 2013 when the Student Volunteer Army, neighbourhood policing team members and local residents came together to prepare a Peverel St site for planting. The land had been loaned by Housing NZ on a year-to-year basis. The garden has since developed into an area of great pride for the community. Housing NZ recently agreed
to extend the lease further so volunteers could continue their work at the garden. Preserves made from garden produce were included in the “welcome” packs given by the locals to newly-arriving tenants in Housing NZ’s Rex St complex. Fruit and vegetables were delivered to dozens of households around the suburb. The garden has been a significant factor in the sharp decrease in crime, and greater community well-being in the area, police say. “With the increasing density of housing in Riccarton, the
social investment return that comes from this community garden is invaluable,” Constable Brad Hagerty said. Housing NZ tenancy liaison manager Sheryl Banks who has been heavily involved in the project with the local community, was thrilled it could extend the lease. “This is such a brilliant project and Housing NZ is thrilled we can help the great work done by the volunteers here continue even further.’’ Ms Banks said with Housing NZ recently extending the lease, the garden will continue to grow strongly.

Plans are well under way to open a cafe in the Riccarton Bus Lounge. The city council has been negotiating with Kiwicoffee Ltd. Plans for the cafe have been in the pipeline since last year as the city council has been looking for a cafe tenant since November. Prior to the earthquake for 15 years the company owned and operated “In Italia” cafe situated in Cashel Mall. Transport Operations Manager Steffan Thomas (right) said the city council is expecting the cafe to be operating by the end of August or September this year. The cafe will be installed in the south-east corner of the building. He said most recently city council staff have completed a sublease agreement with a cafe operator for the Riccarton Bus Lounge. Property owner Arthur McKee said the success of the cafe will be dependant on how it is designed. Mr McKee said the problem is there is no line of sight out
of the lounge on Division St – making it difficult to see any trouble caused by youth. He said he sugessted to the city council and indoor and outdoor cafe. “If people were sitting and outside it would help leviate a lot of problems,” he said. But Mr Thomas said additional seating will not be provided for the cafe because there was already seating within the facility. He said coffee will be available for purchase along with a range of cold drinks and fresh food prepared on the premises. A plan for the cafe will not be available for public release until it has been approved by the city council. Since opening last year, the Riccarton Bus Lounge has been a hot-spot for youth causing trouble affecting surrounding businesses. Meanwhile, construction remains on schedule for the northern bus lounge to be completed by the end of June.

Hornby High School Years 7 – 13
Commitment, Achievement, Resilience, Respect
Thank you from new Principal Kia ora koutou, Talofa, Kia Orana, Malo e lelei, Bula, Fakaalofa atu, Namaste, Kumusta. Haere mai ki Te Huruhuru Ao o Horomaka. Warm greetings to the Hornby High School community. What a way to start. What an entrance. I’d like to begin with my sincerest thanks to the entire community for such a marvellous and memorable Mihi whakatau on my first day on Monday, May 2. The kapa haka was truly heartfelt and memorable, the kōrero powerful and sincere. My former students and colleagues from Christ’s College all made comment on the power, the standing and the emotion that came from everyone in the Hornby school community who welcomed me into the fold. They were as moved as I was. My own kōrero contained the key message that all will hear regularly from me: aim high, aspire to be the best, aspire for excellence in everything that you do. Tihei mauri ora – Behold, there is life. And perhaps the key to that is to find and
follow your passion. I have already discovered that there are boys within the school who sing like magic, but who are shy about performing in public. If that’s your passion, run hard to capture and develop it. The true test is performing before a real audience. Do it! If it’s computer animation, or creative writing, league or netball, it doesn’t matter, chase hard. Chase your heart and your head will follow. This is why our core values are so important. Excellence requires Commitment, Achievement, Resilience and Respect. And underlying all of this is the need for self belief. It’s difficult to expect others to believe in you if you don’t believe in yourself. Of course these are not always things that come naturally, and one of our many tasks as a school is to help our awesome Hornby High School’s new Principal, Robin Sutton, centre, was welcomed at the start of the term. He is pictured here with Kaye Banks (Chair BOT), Jon Rogers (Deputy Principal), Lorraine Sutton and Garth Wynne (Executive Principal at Christ’s College who lead the Christ’s College party).
Principal Robin Sutton, back centre, with Prefects, back from left, Sam Faalilo, Ashley Hider and Tyrone Sowden, and front row from left Krizia Dominguez, Moesha Quigley, Naseeba Kaskar, Rose Eaton, Koka Alamein Connell (Kaikaranga for Robin Sutton), and Makayla Williams-Smith.
young people to develop these values, and this self belief. We do this by offering an amazing array of opportunities, and as every previous Principal’s column in this publication seems to suggest, take a look on this page and judge for yourself the opportunities that are available. Our aim is to develop the whole student, to help each individual to become the best that she or he can, to be able to hold true to those values of manaakitanga and kaitiakitanga amongst so many things. While I have only formally joined the Hornby team at the start of this term, I have been engaged in ongoing meetings with our senior leadership team, Ministry of Education staff, and the architects
working on the planning of our rebuild, since January. The initial master plan prepared last year has been amended as the Ministry is now rebuilding us for the larger roll of 800 students (last year’s master plan anticipated 640 students). The concept has changed a little and the rebuild will now focus more on whānau-style vertical year groupings as students learn, with our more senior students breaking out from what we are currently calling learning hubs so that they can use more specialist learning resources in the sciences, technology and the arts in particular. The “relational” whānau/family nature of Hornby High School, which has long been acknowledged as a strength of the school, will be further strengthened
with the new buildings. Individuals matter, we care about every individual. Finally, I will be trying to make sure that I am available as much as possible, so if there are pressing issues you’d like to take up with me, please feel to contact me. You can follow my thinking on issues that are both specific to Hornby High School and also of more general educational interest on my Principal’s blog “Whakatauki: He waka eke noa”, after all we are indeed all in this together – https:// whakataukihewakaekenoa.blogspot. co.nz/.
Ngā mihi Robin Sutton Principal
Thai visitors enjoy five week stay Hornby hosted 20 UCE students and their teacher from Thailand last term. The students, pictured at right, were in New Zealand for five weeks and enjoyed visits to local attractions as well as joining regular classes and mixing with Kiwi students. Thank you to the students and staff who made their stay so enjoyable as well as to the homestay families who shared their homes with the students.

Students volunteer
Last term students from Hornby High participated in the first UC Student Volunteer Army volunteer programme. As a part of this, students worked alongside the SVA members in a community project at Halswell Quarry. An area of wetland damaged by fire in 2014 was restored to its former glory with help from Hornby High School students and the University of Canterbury Student Volunteer Army.
Polyfest performance Hornby was one of 18 schools that performed at Spacifically Pacific, the annual Polyfest event. The group, pictured at left, ranges in age from Year 7 to Year 13 and comprises many cultures: Samoan, Tongan, Fijian, Fijian Island, Cook Island, Maori and Pakeha. They presented their items extremely well in a performance the crowd loved – a proud day for the Hornby students.

The building was opened by MP for Auckland central and Associate Minister of Education Nikki Kaye followed with afternoon tea. She was then given a tour of the new facility by head boarder Jack Rankin and deputy head boy Month Hodge. School director of marketing

Ao Tawhiti learning adviser Kate Armour said the school’s performance The It Crowd will be about a group of students who use social media on their IT devices. “Our dance shows the struggle young people have reconciling their life and friends on social media with their real lives,” she said. HEALTH & BEAUTY
Reclaim your identity When it comes to dentures, Christchurch people have access to world-leading techniques and oral aesthetics right on their doorstep. At his Montreal street studio Lovebite, internationally renowned dental technician Richard Greenlees creates beautiful bespoke dentures with small nuances in the fabrication, colour and shape, and even slight imperfections to create a uniquely individual smile. There is no need for dentures to look false. Richard takes a great deal of satisfaction in making bespoke dentures that look 100 per cent real and natural, personally guiding his patients through the transformation process to craft a smile that reflects their individuality and personality, and recreates their natural pre-denture smile. Not only do Lovebite teeth look real, the whole structure and shape of the patient’s face is transformed with Richard’s top-of-the-line dentures, something he calls his signature ‘denture

lift’. “With appropriate facial support, the facial tissues are brought back into the correct position, the lips are reformed, and beauty is restored,” he says. it is the interior architecture of a Lovebite denture that helps to create a more youthful appearance by recovering the face and skeletal shape that can be lost after years of wearing dentures. As the smile is transformed, so are the patient’s confidence, and the way they feel about themselves. Richard’s vast experience includes 15 years of running his own clinic in the prestigious harley st, London, where he treated people from all walks of life, from barrow boys to the rich and famous, politicians, actors and musicians. his techniques are recognised as

Miles Cone (DMD, Ms, FACP, CDt), a prosthodontist from Oregon, UsA, said in November 2015: “Richard Greenlees’ craftsmanship is as stunning as it is unique. There is liberation in the calculated imperfection, indeed an asperity that reflects a purely human element.” in addition to dentures, Richard also carries out crown and bridge, veneer and implant work, in conjunction with like-minded dental surgeons who complement his creative and aesthetic work. “teeth are as different as fingerprints and vary greatly depending on a person’s age, sex and race. Dentures from Lovebite reflect this, and are as unique and individual as the people they are made for,” says Richard. There is nothing more satisfying for Richard than to see his patients leave the Lovebite studio with their selfconfidence and identity restored, as well as their smile.
Confidence and beauty is restored with a new denture by Lovebite.

Clean lint filters in your clothes dryer BY MARK THOMAS – FIRE RISK MANAGEMENT OFFICER
Last Saturday a fire reported in a clothes dryer in a commercial building in St Asaph St was dealt with by the two city crews attending using breathing apparatus and fire extinguishers. It’s another timely reminder that colder conditions and the need for drying washing inside must hit us soon considering we’re just a couple of weeks short of officially being in winter. Home tumble dryers are found everywhere and will be utilised more and more as winter bites. They are generally fairly safe but we do occasionally get called out when they ignite. The best prevention for this happening is to clean the lint filter every time before turning the machine on and to make sure someone is home while it’s operating. Then if all does go wrong the result should be no worse than that in St Asaph St. It does tend to ruin your day when contacted at work to be told your house has burned down. Two good examples last weekend of firefighters going the extra mile included the retrieval of a model plane from a tree at QE II and the assistance given to an

elderly lady in South New Brighton. This woman had slipped and crashed through a glass door at her home. She was kept in hospital overnight and then released, only to come home to the still broken door. Wainoni’s crew spent an hour and a half contacting insurance and repair people. They stayed available for further calls but saved some real anguish by taking charge. That’s good work.
A performing arts centre, sports facilities, gymnasium, a cutting-edge library and technology suites are just some of the facilities that will be built into the new Avonside girls’ and Shirley Boys’ High Schools. The two schools will be open alongside each other on a new campus in time for the beginning of the 2019
Volunteers wanted for dementia sufferers Alzheimers Canterbury is looking for recruits to join its volunteering service by becoming a companion, activities assistant, or driver for people with dementia. A companion visits an Alzheimers Canterbury client on a weekly or fortnightly basis. They may go for a walk, watch a movie or have a cup of tea and a chat. Alzheimers Canterbury volunteer co-ordinator Monique Schoneveld said they are trying to help dementia sufferers have “fun and meaningful” lives. “We want clients in our community to live well with dementia, to have fun and meaningful lives. Volunteers can play a huge role in this often being the highlight of their day,” she said. Activity assistants help with a community activities programme run
through Alzheimers Canterbury, and give clients opportunities to enjoy the things they used to in a normalised, safe and supported setting. Activities include swimming, community gardening, art appreciation, baking for Ronald McDonald House, and others. Another way to make a client’s day is as a personal driver. Many clients have lost their driver’s license so transport can be an everyday hurdle. To make sure a volunteer is compatible with a client, there is a matching service run through Alzheimers Canterbury, which ensures a match. To find out more about how to become a volunteer, companion, activities assistant, or driver for a client, email monique@alzcanty. co.nz or phone 379 2590.
school year. The ministry of education is spending at least $80-million on the campus. Qe2 park has been named as the preferred site for the campus, where it could be built alongside the eastern Sport and recreation Centre that will have numerous swimming pools and water facilities. This will be the first time in new Zealand’s history that two single sex schools have co-located. Avonside girls’ principal Sue Hume says the new campus will offer the best of both the single-sex and co-educational worlds. “Students will spend most of their day in a single-sex environment but there will be times when they can interact with students from the other school. for example, we’ll have a shared library, a combined café and an extensive bus network that students from both schools willl use. This enables our students valuable social development,” says Sue Hume. “This will a place the community can be proud of with facilities that everyone will be able to use. We are looking forward to seeing the proposal become reality.”

through the University of Canterbury. programmes focus on inquiry learning, high thinking skills and global perspectives. Academic scholarships are awarded annually to the top performing student at each year level and an entrance Scholarship is awarded on the basis of an examination for year 8 students. in January 2019, the new Shirley Boys’ will open alongside Avonside girls’ on the former Qeii park site. This will be the first time two single sex schools have co-located in new Zealand and both schools are looking forward to the move. “There will be one campus, but there will be two separate schools each retaining its own culture, curriculum and uniform” says John laurenson.
Riccarton High School Peerswick Scholarship
every yeAr riccarton High School awards two peerswick Scholarships to year 8 students who show strengths in the academic, sporting, cultural and service fields. The term ‘peerswick’ is an Upper riccarton name which has been associated with the school since 1959 when the school magazine was named peerswick. in the latter part of the 19th century, a local horse stud was called
peerswick after a famous racehorse at the stud called The peer and the area was called peerswick for many years. The 2012 winners were Dean Holdaway and rachel Wu. now in year 13, the two have made their mark in the school just as have all the Scholarship winners. Winning the $1,000 peerswick Scholarship was an achievement they were proud of as well as providing a useful investment for the future. At school they gained entrance to the top class, felt confident that they could achieve and seeing their names on the honours board in the hall has been a constant reminder of their potential. Dean came to riccarton from Halswell School, while rachel came from Westburn
School. Both students have a fine pedigree in music. They are members of the new Zealand Secondary Schools Symphony orchestra where they play the clarinet. They have both gained grade 8 in clarinet. rachel was a member of the chamber group ‘papricca’ which won the people’s Choice in the national Chamber music competition, a fine achievement. She also sings in the auditioned choir, ‘Stella Cantare’. Dean plays in the Concert Band and the Jazz Band and last year had the lead role in the school production of ‘Bugsy malone’. Both rachel and Dean have achieved excellence in nCeA in both year 11 and year 12. rachel gained 2nd place in the Brain Bee competition as a year 11 and has gained
distinction in several maths and science competitions. Dean is planning to study electrical engineering at Canterbury, while rachel will study medicine at otago. As year 13s they are very involved in student activities, organising events, mentoring year 9s at the beginning of the year and being role models through the school. They feel well prepared for this task as they have been encouraged to be leaders and show responsibility right from year 9. ‘The peerswick Scholarship was not only wonderful to win, it also gave us a great start as we began our time at riccarton. We have had great years here and this year is no different,’ said Dean.

W
hile first aid courses must achieve prescribed new Zealand Qualification Authority (nZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting nZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight. nZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for first aid training based on currently registered nZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know. Course differences training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names. employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks. Unit standard-based first aid training The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be for training based on: • unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment • unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training
and assessment • For refresher training where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment First aid training must cover the outcomes of the nZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines. Only first aid training providers accredited by nZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. nZQA conduct regular external evaluative reviews on all training providers. new Zealand red Cross is proud to hold a double highly Confident accreditation in both educational Performance and Capability in self-Assessment. This means that nZ red Cross is a Category One training provider. First aid refresher training refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months, which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course. If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency. For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times.

THE ROYAL New Zealand Air Force Band is celebrating the Queen's 90th birthday in style with a special afternoon concert at the New Zealand Air Force Museum at Wigram on Sunday 5th June. Surrounded by the museum's mighty collection of Air Force history, the band will perform music that spans the nine decades of the Queen's life so far. The afternoon performance on June 5th features a segment dedicated to music by British composers, from Walton's stirring Crown Imperial March, to excerpts from popular musical theatre, through to the theme music for the James Bond 007 movies. During the RNZAF Band's last performance at the Air Force Museum in 2015, the band's 65 strong brass and woodwinds under the baton of Flight Lieutenant Brew received a standing ovation from the packed house. “We're looking forward to Walton's Crown Imperial March, and we'll also reference some great British artists including The Beatles, Queen and David Bowie,” Flight Lieutenant Brew said. “Our band is wonderfully versatile. We'll be taking the opportunity to feature some of our virtuoso players in solo
pieces at Wigram.” The Queen's Birthday concert programme will also include Gershwin's An American in Paris, Glinka's Russlan and Ludmila Overture, as well as a full symphonic version of the impressive soundtracks from the Star Wars movies. Flight Lieutenant Brew recently traveled with the NZ Defence Force Contingent to conduct services at Gallipoli. The RNZAF Band performed in February at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo during the NZ Festival in Wellington. Air Force Band in concert at the New Zealand Air Force Museum, Wigram th Sunday 5 June, 2pm, New Zealand Air Force Museum, Wigram. Adult: $25, Senior $22 Child/Student: $5 Tickets: New Zealand Air Force Museum (03) 343 - 9532.
